Brian recommends - A Sexplanation

Brian reommends is a new series where I quickly let you know some things that I love, that you should absolutely check out!

Growing up gay in the conservative South, I definitely had/have some stigma and shame regarding sex. Not only did I never had “the talk” with my parents, if I had, it probably wouldn’t have been the talk I actually needed.

These types of themes are explored in the wonderful new documentary, A Sexplanation by director, journalist and subject Alex Liu.

The film expertly and sometimes comically looks at the why some of us are still so hesitant to talk about sex and why we have these sexual hangups in the first place. The film leaves us with the message that we should own our sexuality, not letting anyone else take it from us… particularly those who may have ingrained that shame into us in the first place!

A Highlight

There are so many highlights I could choose from, but I’m going to pick the scene where Alex asks actual Sex Researchers to define sex. It’s hilarious and telling. Leave it to Kristen Gilbert, a delightful professor that Alex interviews to explain it to us like the children we were never explained sex to in the first place.
