I’ve lived my share of lifetimes over the years. From copy machine repair dispatcher to professional actor/director. I’ve been an organic burger server, a personal and executive assistant…even a NYC housekeeper. I’ve worked in finance, building management, substance abuse treatment…lived in Mississippi, New York, Nebraska, and Los Angeles (twice!).
One night, in 1987, I was dropped off by my parents at the Crossroads Twin Cinema in my hometown of Corinth, Mississippi. I was supposed to meet up with my sister and her friends to see “Police Academy 4” when I accidentally stumbled into the wrong side of the theater where “Moonstruck” was playing. Realizing my mistake, I went to the ticket counter where the usher told me that once I had my ticket it was too late to switch sides.
So, I went in, sat down on the front row and watched, mesmerized!
I was instantly obsessed…with Cher, Moonstruck, NYC, and very soon after, the Oscars. I predicted my first Academy Awards in 1987 at the ripe old age of 13 by entering a contest in the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper.
I, of course, correctly predicted Cher.
Over the years I would continue to be inspired by movies and television. “Bugsy” in 1991. “Pulp Fiction” in 1994.
“The X-Files” made such an impact on me that I changed my major to Theatre after a weekend VHS binge of a copied first two seasons that I got from a fellow member of the “duchovniks” email mailing list! (Oh, the 90s!)
I eventually moved to NYC and was even more inspired by films like “Mulholland Drive” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” not to mention the city itself.
In 2009 I started my website, Awards Wiz, where I would write about film and cover the Oscars for a decade.
