Pepito Has a Doll, a children’s book recommendation

Pepito loves his doll Lola. She's his only friend. He takes her to school in secret because his schoolmates will make fun of him. He's shy. The other kids at school don't play with him. Every night he prays to find a friend at school. One day a new student arrives at Pepito's school, Miguel. Find out if Pepito and Migues become friends in this charming story of a boy and his doll.

Every once in a while I get asked to cover something outside of film and television, which is always fun!

I was recently sent an advance copy of the wonderful LGBTQ+ children’s story, “Pepito Has a Doll,” written by Jesús Canchola Sánchez and illustrated by Armando Minjárez Monárrez. This is a lovely book that I very much hope you will share with your family.

I can remember being a kid and surrounding myself to sleep with a brown teddy bear from JC Penny and a few other stuffed animals. It helped me feel protected in a world where I wasn’t fully capable or ready to be myself.

I don’t remember when those comforts left my life, but reading “Pepito Has a Doll,” particularly when Pepito meets his friend Miguel, I couldn’t help but think of my own friends who accept and support me, many of whom have done so for years.

How wonderfully lucky is today’s generation of children and parents to have this book!
