A Dim Valley at Oxford Virtual Film Festival

I can count 3 films in the past decade or so that I’ve watched immediately after viewing for the first time. One was “Call Me By Your Name,” next was “Jules of Light and Dark” (a film I programmed for Oxford Film Festival a couple of years ago) and “A Dim Valley,” written and directed by Brandon Colvin.

This isn’t a review. I don’t feel that is my place and not even sure if it’s time to review the film. “A Dim Valley” was to have its World Premiere with us at Oxford Film Festival, and it will be doing so virtually, United Stateside tomorrow (April 25th).

In “A Dim Valley,” a curmudgeonly biologist and his stoner graduate students encounter a group of mysterious backpackers who disrupt their lives in beautiful and surprising ways.

When I watched the film for the first time I saw hints of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks,” and Shakespeare. The film is fully sincere, not a hint of irony. That’s not to say it isn’t quirky…and at times it is hilarious…but on the second viewing I understood that Colvin’s film couldn’t be placed in a box. It is fully original and its own aesthetic.

Watching it again last night, for the 4th time, I was yet again blown away by Colvin’s use of space and breath, along with masterful casting and fantastic acting.

We are so lucky to be sharing this work with all of you tomorrow, with an exclusive q&a with Brandon, moderated by yours truly.

Please join us in celebrating this film, supporting Brandon and Oxford Film Festival.
